Bunk Art

Bunk’Art is perhaps the most interesting and creative creation of the Albanian Museum. Occupying a large underground facility built during the communist period. The expansive bunker interior has been converted into a national museum that focuses on the rather complex and harsh past involving totalitarianism and political dynamics of Albania. Bunk’Art depicts history through artwork, allowing the tourists to appreciate the times of communism in Albania.

The museum consists of a total of five underground floors and nearly a hundred rooms that played different functions such as dormitories, conference rooms, and strategic places in case of a nuclear conflict. Such spaces have been transformed into exhibitions depicting the life of people under the rule of Hoxha. Thematic exhibitions are organized in each of the rooms exploring certain aspects of communist Albania, including potent surveillance by the secret police, propaganda and its effects, and suppression of religious and personal freedoms.

One of the more eery parts of Bunk’Art focuses on the “Sigurimi” which was the official name of the Albanian secret police, famous for the sheer brutality with which they ruled the country and quashed opposition. It is here that one is made aware of how the state is always watching. There are shown various papers, accounts, and even spy paraphernalia.

At Bunk’Art, you will not only find preserved antiques. You will also find exhibits that depict the human cost of dictatorship and the challenges of coming to terms with such a history. These works of art have been installed in the museum in such a way that both history and imaginary art co-exist in an often puzzling and sorrowful atmosphere.
